This is me taking back control of my life. What the *&^% have you done lately?

Perfect Enemy is an advanced writing RPG inspired by the worlds of the Jumper and Wanted movies. People aren't as they seem, and the truth isn't necessarily important.

The fate of mankind is decided by a binary code written in a fabric woven by an ancient Fraternity of assassins, but the story that's told here isn't binary. It isn't black and white, good and bad, light and dark, like the Paladins teach. It's what's in between that counts. And it's in those in-between places that the Jumpers roam. It's an intricate dance, woven together like something from The Loom of Fate. Where do you fit in?

Leon listens to all of this quietly, sure he doesn’t know what to say. Her mother died when she was young, and so she grew up with the Fraternity. She grew up… surrounded by assassins. Well, no wonder she’s having such a hard time with all of this. That is clearly beyond not normal into a completely strange childhood.

The end part… Leon nods, having expected that, by now. It seems… like it is a big deal, for her. And for him… he’s not sure. He finds himself really not wanting to hurt her. No matter what sort of feelings he has for her, he has feelings for her. He likes her, and… he knows, he realizes that if he has ‘just sex’ with her, he could ruin it all. She’s giving people a chance… through him.

That’s a lot of pressure. Leon’s pretty sure he’s not prepared to handle that sort of pressure. But he’s also not prepared to just… take advantage of her.

“It’s never… ‘just’ sex,” Leon says slowly, trying to explain… emotions. It’s not easy. “Even if you want it to be.”

“Well, I can pretend it is, until it really is,” Rose says after a moment, not looking at him. “It has worked quite well, in my past experience.”

She sighs silently. “I don’t know what to do,” she admits again. “But I don’t want to pressure you. I realize that this is a bad time.” Considering his life is in danger. “An understatement.”

This table has more cracks than she’d realized it had. Perhaps she should get it replaced. She’s not distracting herself as well as she should. Damn. “I do not know what you want.” There. She said it. But he’d also said… that he couldn’t really decide anything until after Paris. She does understand that. Very well.

Leon sighs a little, looking down at the table as well. They both know this is a bad time, considering. He's got assassins after him, and Rose just decided that she doesn't want to be in the Fraternity any longer. It's not just him- it's both of them that this is a bad time for. But then again, Rose might not realize that this is probably a bad time for her. That wouldn't surprise Leon at all.

"You're not pressuring me," Leon says after a minute, which is very true. He's been pressured before. She's never met some of the women he's dealt with. Yes, she is an assassin and rather frightening when she wants to be- although surprisingly not very, right now- but she's also very... blunt about her intentions. She doesn't hold things back, or use them against you later, like some women. Women are an altogether frightening people, Leon has long since decided.

As for what he wants... well. He'd like to be able to figure that out, that's a certainty. And not even just for himself. He can't just hold everything up. "I'm not sure, Rose," he says finally, quietly. "I just- I want to be careful. I don't want to do anything wrong and..." Ruin people for her forever? "...give you the wrong impression. I don't know."

Give her the wrong impression? Rose wonders what the right or wrong impression is. “You have not done anything wrong,” she says hesitantly after a moment. “You have been very kind. And I appreciate it.”

She swallows slightly, a habit she’d thought she’d broken as a teenager. “Do not worry about impressions.” What would the wrong impression be, anyway? That he’d fallen head over heels for her and wanted to run off to Las Vegas to get married, or some nonsense? Honestly.

Staring down at her mug of tea, she realizes that she hasn’t drunk any of it, yet, and she lifts it, taking a sip. He doesn’t seem to be giving her a straight answer, but then, she’s not even sure what the question is. What does she want? For him to want to… be her boyfriend, of all the ridiculous ideas? That would be… well, ridiculous. They had casual sex. Which many unattached adults (and some attached ones) take part it. It had been nice. This is perfectly normal behavior, and she shouldn’t expect any sort of admission of emotion from him afterwards; she’s only feeling this way because it was her first time.

And she’s not sure if she wants to do it again, if things are this confusing after the fact. It had been nice, yes, but surely it isn’t that nice with every man, and really… what had they honestly done that she couldn’t take care of, herself, now that she has a better idea of the process?

Yes, maybe it would be best to just… not do this again. Then she wouldn’t have to be so… confused… and if she’s honest with herself, a bit hurt… although she’s fairly sure that that springs from disillusionment. The last of the very deeply-buried daydreams of a romantic teenage girl… someone who died a long time ago. It’s not anything Leon did, not really. She’s surprised, frankly, that she had any innocence left to lose.

Looking up from the table, she forces herself to attempt a smile. “I am going to shower again. You should try to sleep. I have some pills, if you need them.” With that she stands, fleeing from the kitchen as calmly as she can manage.

Going to shower again? Leon watches, eyes a little wider than usual, as Rose pretty much flees the kitchen, leaving him alone. He almost gets up to follow her- almost. He knows he probably should, but he has no idea what he would say. He would only make it worse. This isn't exactly easy, after all.

So he stays, sitting alone at the table until he hears the door to the bathroom click shut, at which point he sighs and puts his head on the table, staring at the wall across from him. Clearly, that was the wrong thing to say. He's not terrible good at this part to begin with; and now he's worried about re-introducing Rose to emotions? Not to mention- he actually likes her. That certainly complicates things. He wouldn't mind- he certainly wouldn't mind doing it again, as she said. But he can't, he knows he can't, even if she says it would be just sex. That would be taking advantage of her and she wouldn't even know it. He has some standards.

Really, he just has no idea what to do. He doesn't want to upset her even more than he clearly already has, and he can't promise anything at all until after he knows if he's going to die or not. It would be wrong to do anything more before they go through with that. And then- well. Would it be wrong to ask her on a date? He has no idea. Everything is so complicated, and he's terrified that he's going to do something terribly wrong and cause her to lose any faith she has in people at all.

That much pressure makes him nervous, he'll admit. And more cautious than he would normally be. Not to mention the natural caution he has in dealing with relationships with women. Add to that the part where he's genuinely fond of her, and you have one seriously confused Leon. Who is never going to be able to sleep.

Rose lingers in the shower for more than half an hour, hoping the steam and the heat will make her sleepy. They do make her limbs feel heavy, but she’s still not very sleepy when she gets out.

She ends up just sitting on the couch in the living room; she’d seen the light on in the bedroom, but hadn’t been able to work up the courage to go back there. But the couch is just as comfortable… she’s good out here.

The little voice in the back of her head reminds her that she’s being a coward, that she’d lost her virginity less than an hour ago and now she’s avoiding the man… in her own apartment. She ignores the little voice, though, concentrating on her book until the words start to swim on the page.

She doesn’t even notice when her eyes close, and her head falls onto the throw pillow, her book dropping from her slack fingers to the floor with a dull thud.
